Our journey began in May 1982, when a simple but powerful need emerged within our community, families needed quality childcare and education, and there was only one Centre available in Gisborne to support them.

At the heart of this vision was Miriam Swarbrick, whose passion and commitment became the driving force behind establishing a space where children could be nurtured, supported, and inspired. Seeing the growing number of families, particularly those connected to the local polytechnic, it became clear that more was needed — not just childcare, but a place of belonging and learning.

With determination and community spirit, a steering committee was formed, and the foundations of our Centre were laid at Central Baptist Church. The church opened its doors, offering space for a crèche during the week — a generous act that reflected the shared belief in supporting tamariki and their whānau.

From those humble beginnings, for over 40 years our Centre has grown into a place grounded in strong relationships, continuity, and care. Many of our Staff and Committee have dedicated decades to the Centre, creating a sense of stability and deep connection that continues to shape who we are today.
